In most Lucknow homes the dining area shares space with the living room, so it has to work as its own room without cutting the space in half.

Sizing the table to the room
Most dining areas are bought as a set and then made to fit. It works better the other way round.
Per person — allow about 60cm of table edge each, so nobody is knocking elbows.
Behind the chair — 75cm to pull a chair out and sit down, and closer to 105cm if someone needs to walk past behind a seated person.
Shape — a round table works better than a rectangle in a tight corner, because there are no corners to catch a hip. Bench seating on one side saves space in a narrow room, though it is harder to get in and out of.
Standard table height is around 75cm. If you are pairing it with a crockery unit, we check that drawers and shutters still open with chairs in place.
Sharing a room with the living area
In most Lucknow flats the dining table sits in the same room as the sofa, so the two have to read as separate areas without physically dividing the space.
We do that with a change in ceiling or lighting above the table, a rug that defines the footprint, or a crockery unit acting as a low divider rather than a wall. Full partitions almost always make both halves feel smaller.
The sightline from the entrance matters too. If the first thing you see walking in is the back of a dining chair, the room feels cluttered before you are through the door.
Light over the table
A pendant over the dining table is the one light in the house that has a correct height.
Roughly 75cm to 90cm above the tabletop keeps it out of sightlines across the table while still lighting the food. Too high and it lights the room instead; too low and you are looking around it.
Width should be somewhere between a half and two-thirds of the table width. It belongs on its own switch and, ideally, a dimmer, because the light you want for a weekday dinner is not the light you want when guests are over.
