Ready-made wardrobes waste the space above them and never quite fit the wall. Ours are made on site to the room’s real dimensions, floor to ceiling.

We plan the inside before the outside — hanging heights, drawer depths and loft storage sized for what you actually own.

What we plan

Swing or sliding — sliding saves floor space in narrow rooms; swing gives the full opening.

Internal planning — hanging, shelving, drawers and loft, laid out before shutters are chosen.

Finishes — laminate, acrylic, membrane or veneer, with the trade-offs explained.

Planning the inside before the outside

A wardrobe is only as good as its internal layout, and that starts with counting what you actually own.

Long hanging — 150cm to 170cm of height for sarees, coats and full-length clothes.

Short hanging — 100cm to 110cm for shirts and trousers, which lets you stack two rails in the height one long rail would use.

Shelves — 35cm to 40cm apart for folded stacks. Any deeper and the pile collapses when you pull from the middle.

Loft — above about 210cm, for luggage and bedding you reach a few times a year.

We work this out against your own wardrobe before drawing the shutters, because the split between hanging, shelving and drawers is different for every family and it cannot be changed once the carcass is built.

Depth, doors and narrow bedrooms

Two dimensions do most of the damage when they are got wrong.

Depth — 60cm is what a hanger needs to sit square. At 55cm it just about works. At 45cm, clothes touch the door and you are limited to shelves or a side-facing rail.

Door type — a swing shutter gives you the full opening and complete access, but needs around 60cm of clear floor to open. Sliding doors need no floor space at all, which makes them the right call in a narrow room, but you lose a little usable width to the overlap and you can only ever see half the wardrobe at once.

Built wall to wall and floor to ceiling, a fitted wardrobe uses the dead space above and beside that a ready-made unit wastes. On an external wall we leave an air gap behind the back panel, because through the monsoon that panel would otherwise sit against damp masonry.

Finishes, and how each one wears

All four common finishes look good on day one. They differ entirely in how they look after five years.

Laminate — the most forgiving. Hard-wearing, easy to clean, wide range, and it hides handling marks well.

Acrylic — the high-gloss mirror finish. It looks excellent and it shows everything: dust, fingerprints and fine scratches. In a dusty, road-facing flat that is a daily commitment.

Membrane — seamless and good for curved or routed profiles, but it does not enjoy sustained heat, so we keep it away from hobs and direct sun.

Veneer — real wood, and the best-looking of the four, with the trade-off that it needs polish maintenance and no two sheets match exactly.
