The living room carries more weight than any other space in an Indian home. It is where guests are received and where most of the design budget shows.

We start with circulation and seating, then bring in the feature wall, lighting and finishes.

Seating, screen and circulation

A living room works or fails on how people move through it, which is decided before a single finish is chosen.

Sofa to screen — somewhere between one and a half and two and a half times the screen’s diagonal. Closer than that and you are aware of the pixels; further and you lose detail.

Coffee table — about 45cm from the sofa edge, close enough to reach a cup without leaning forward.

Walkways — 75cm of clear route through the room, so nobody crosses in front of a seated conversation to reach the balcony or the kitchen.

Pushing every piece of furniture flat against the walls is the instinct in a small room, and it usually makes it feel smaller. Pulling seating slightly in often reads as more space, not less.

Long, narrow living rooms

A lot of flats in Gomti Nagar, Sushant Golf City and Vrindavan Yojna share the same living room shape: long, fairly narrow, and open to the dining area at one end.

The screen belongs on the longer wall. Put it on a short end wall and everyone sits in a line down a corridor.

Slim-depth furniture earns its keep here. A sofa 85cm deep instead of 100cm gives back 15cm across the whole room, which is the difference between a comfortable walkway and a squeeze.

Breaking the length into two zones, seating at one end and dining at the other, stops it reading as a passage. A mirror on the long wall widens it visually, though we keep it out of the line of sight from the screen.

Layered light and the feature wall

Layered lighting means three separate things, each on its own circuit: general light for the room, task light where people read or sit, and accent light on the feature wall or artwork.

On the feature wall itself, the material decision is partly about where the sun lands. Veneer and dark laminate both fade over years on a wall taking direct afternoon light, and fluted or louvred panels hold dust in every groove, which matters more here than in most cities.

We also avoid high-gloss finishes on the wall facing a window or the screen, because the reflection is distracting exactly when you are trying to watch something.
