Layout, levels and waterproofing
Bathrooms are unforgiving because almost every decision is buried before you see the result.
Clearances — a WC wants roughly 45cm of clear space either side and 60cm in front. A comfortable shower needs about 90cm by 90cm. In a small bathroom, a door that opens outward buys back usable floor.
Wet and dry — separating the shower area, even with a low kerb and a screen, keeps the rest of the floor dry and the vanity from taking constant splash.
Slopes — the floor needs a consistent fall toward the drain. Get it wrong and water sits in a corner permanently, which no amount of tiling fixes.
Waterproofing — treated up the walls, and higher inside the shower zone. This is the failure nobody sees until a neighbour’s ceiling stains.
Hard water, and what it does to finishes
Lucknow’s water supply is hard. It leaves scale on anything it dries on, and that should shape what you buy.
Glass and chrome show every drop. A shower screen needs wiping after use, or you accept a permanent film. Brushed and matte finishes hide scale far better than polished chrome.
Grout — cement grout stains and darkens over years in a wet room. Epoxy grout costs more and holds its colour.
Ventilation — through the monsoon a bathroom without a working exhaust stays damp, and that is how mould starts on ceilings and grout lines. An extractor sized to the room is not optional here.
Storage, mirrors and light
Bathroom storage is usually an afterthought bolted on at the end. It works better built to the wall.
A niche recessed into the shower wall has to be formed during masonry, before tiling. Added later it becomes a shelf that collects water.
For mirrors, light from both sides at face height is far better than a single light above, which throws shadows down your face. Any fitting near the shower zone needs an appropriate moisture rating, and that gets specified rather than assumed.
