A home office fails on ergonomics and light long before it fails on looks. Desk height, screen position and glare decide whether the room gets used.

Desk, chair and screen height

Ergonomics is just a set of measurements, and getting them right costs nothing at the drawing stage.

Desk height — 72cm to 75cm suits most adults. If you are notably tall or short, this is worth setting to you rather than to a standard.

Desk depth — 60cm is the minimum, and 75cm is better once a monitor is on it, because you need the screen an arm’s length away.

Screen — the top of the display at or just below eye level, so your neck is not tilted up or down through the day.

Seat — 42cm to 47cm off the floor, with feet flat. If the desk has to be higher for other reasons, the chair needs a footrest to match.

Light, glare and video calls

Two different problems get confused here: seeing your screen, and being seen on it.

For the screen, the window belongs to the side of the desk, not behind it and not in front. A monitor perpendicular to the window avoids both reflection and the silhouette effect.

For calls, light needs to come from in front of you, ideally at around 45 degrees. A window behind your chair turns you into an outline, which is the single most common video call problem.

Through the Lucknow summer, west-facing rooms need adjustable blinds rather than fixed curtains, because the light that is pleasant at eleven is unusable at four. We also avoid a downlight directly above the desk, since it lands straight on the screen.

Power, network and sound

The things that make a home office feel professional are mostly hidden.

Sockets belong at desk height, not at skirting level behind a cabinet. A cable tray under the desktop keeps everything off the floor. A wired network point is worth running while the walls are open, because it is the one thing you cannot add later without mess.

If your building runs on an inverter or generator, we plan which desk points sit on the backup circuit, so a power cut does not take your call down with the lights.

For sound, a rug, curtains and an upholstered chair do most of the work. A room of hard surfaces echoes badly on calls, and soft furnishing is a cheaper fix than acoustic panels.
